there is/are (animate)

There Is / There Are (Animate Beings)

JLPT N5Fixed phraseNeutral
~がいる is used to express the existence or presence of animate beings such as people, animals, insects, and fish. It parallels ~がある, which is used for inanimate objects, plants, and abstract things. The basic pattern places a location marked by at the beginning, followed by the animate noun marked by , and ends with いる. In polite speech, いる becomes います. This is one of the first and most fundamental grammar patterns learned in Japanese because it allows learners to describe who or what living things exist in a given place. A common point of confusion for beginners is choosing between ~がいる and ~がある; the key distinction is that ~がいる is strictly for things that are alive and can move on their own, while ~がある is for everything else, including plants and non-living things.

Examples

Example #1

へやに おかあさんがいる

Mom is in the room.

This sentence uses がいる to state that an animate being — in this case, one's mother — exists in a specific location. The particle marks the location (へや, room), and marks the subject whose existence is being asserted. This is the most basic and common pattern for がいる.

Structures

Basic existence (with location)
(Place に) + Noun (animate) + がいる
Without location
Noun (animate) + がいる

Common mistakes

The most frequent mistake learners make is using がある instead of がいる for animate beings, or vice versa. Remember that がいる is for people, animals, and other living creatures that can move, while がある is for objects, plants, and abstract concepts. Another common error is confusing the particles and in existence sentences; is used when introducing or asserting the existence of something, while is used when the subject is already known and you want to say where it is (as in ねこはにわにいる, 'The cat is in the garden'). Finally, beginners sometimes forget to conjugate いる into います in polite situations, or they incorrectly apply the polite form あります to animate subjects.
