to do something completely for someone

To do something for someone (as a favor)

JLPT N5Auxiliary verbNeutral
The grammar point ~あげる is used when the speaker (or someone the speaker identifies with) performs an action as a favor or kindness for another person. It attaches to the て-form of a verb, forming ~てあげる, and conveys the nuance that the doer is giving the benefit of their action to the receiver. This is part of the Japanese system of giving and receiving (あげる・もらう・くれる), where the direction of the favor matters greatly. ~てあげる is used when the giver is the speaker or someone in the speaker's in-group, and the receiver is someone else — typically not a social superior, as using ~てあげる toward superiors can sound condescending. For more polite situations, the humble form ~てさしあげる is preferred. It contrasts with ~てくれる, where someone else does a favor for the speaker, and ~てもらう, where the speaker receives the benefit of someone's action.

Functions

#1 Doing a favor for someone

Structure
Verb (て-form) + あげる
ともだちにほんんであげた

I read a book for my friend (as a favor).

Here 読んであげた shows that the speaker performed the action of reading for the benefit of their friend. The particle に marks the person who receives the favor. The nuance is that the speaker did this kindly and voluntarily, not out of obligation. This is the most common use of ~てあげる.

Common mistakes

A very common mistake is using ~てあげる when speaking to or about a social superior such as a teacher or boss, which can sound condescending or self-congratulatory — as if you are emphasizing your own generosity. In such cases, ~てさしあげる or a different construction should be used. Another frequent error is confusing ~てあげる with ~てくれる: remember that ~てあげる is for when the speaker (or their in-group) does a favor for someone else, while ~てくれる is for when someone else does a favor for the speaker. Learners also sometimes forget to use the て-form and incorrectly attach あげる directly to the dictionary form of a verb, producing ungrammatical forms like 読むあげる instead of the correct 読んであげる.
