It can also convey the meaning of 'after all' when the speaker returns to an original thought or decision after considering alternatives. やっぱり is the colloquial form of the slightly more formal やはり, and in very casual speech it is often shortened further to やっぱ. While 結局 focuses on an end result after a process, やっぱり emphasizes that the outcome matches what was already anticipated or that the speaker's gut feeling was right. Common mistakes
A common mistake is confusing やっぱり with 結局. While both can translate as 'after all,' 結局 emphasizes a final result after a series of events, whereas やっぱり emphasizes that the result matches an earlier expectation or feeling. Another frequent error is using the formal やはり in casual conversation or using the very casual やっぱ in formal writing; learners should match the variant to the register. Some learners also place やっぱり at the end of a sentence like a sentence-ending particle, but it is an adverb and should appear before the verb or predicate it modifies, or at the beginning of the clause.
