Also, Too, Even, Both A and B
JLPT N5ParticleNeutral
The particle も replaces the particles は, が, or を to express the idea of "also," "too," or "even." It signals that the item it marks shares something in common with another item already mentioned or implied. When used with two or more items in the pattern AもBも, it conveys "both A and B" (in affirmative sentences) or "neither A nor B" (in negative sentences). In addition to its basic additive meaning, も can express surprise or emphasis, similar to English "even," especially when attached to quantities or unexpected items. Unlike は, which sets up a topic with a potential contrast, も explicitly includes the marked item as being the same as something else in the context. Because も replaces は, が, and を, learners must remember not to double up these particles with も; however, other particles like に, で, and へ are kept and も is added after them (e.g., にも).
Functions
#1 Expressing "also" or "too"
Structure
Noun + も + Predicate
わたしは学生です。田中さんも学生です。
Here も replaces the topic particle は after 田中さん to indicate that Tanaka shares the same characteristic — being a student — as the previously mentioned speaker. This is the most fundamental use of も: pointing out that something applies equally to another item. Notice that you do not say 田中さんはも; the particle は is dropped entirely and replaced by も.I am a student. Tanaka is a student, too.
Structures
- Replacing は / が / を
- Noun + も
- After other particles (に, で, へ, etc.)
- Noun + Particle + も
- Both A and B / Neither A nor B
- A も + B も
Common mistakes
The most frequent mistake learners make is combining も with the particles は, が, or を, producing incorrect forms like 私はも or それをも. Remember that も directly replaces these three particles. However, with other particles such as に, で, and へ, you keep the particle and add も after it (e.g., 学校にも行きました). Another common error is using も in affirmative sentences when meaning "neither," or in negative sentences when meaning "both" — always check that the sentence polarity (affirmative or negative) matches the intended meaning of the AもBも pattern. Finally, beginners sometimes confuse も with と for listing items; と simply connects nouns ("A and B"), while も adds the nuance that each item shares the same predicate equally.
