JLPT N5ParticleNeutral
The particle replaces the particles , , or to express the idea of "also," "too," or "even." It signals that the item it marks shares something in common with another item already mentioned or implied. When used with two or more items in the pattern AB, it conveys "both A and B" (in affirmative sentences) or "neither A nor B" (in negative sentences). In addition to its basic additive meaning, can express surprise or emphasis, similar to English "even," especially when attached to quantities or unexpected items. Unlike , which sets up a topic with a potential contrast, explicitly includes the marked item as being the same as something else in the context. Because replaces , , and , learners must remember not to double up these particles with ; however, other particles like , , and are kept and is added after them (e.g., に).

Common mistakes

The most frequent mistake learners make is combining with the particles , , or , producing incorrect forms like 私は or それを. Remember that directly replaces these three particles. However, with other particles such as , , and , you keep the particle and add after it (e.g., 学校に行きました). Another common error is using in affirmative sentences when meaning "neither," or in negative sentences when meaning "both" — always check that the sentence polarity (affirmative or negative) matches the intended meaning of the AB pattern. Finally, beginners sometimes confuse with for listing items; simply connects nouns ("A and B"), while adds the nuance that each item shares the same predicate equally.
