ましょうか is a polite sentence-ending expression used to make offers or suggestions. It has two main uses: offering to do something for someone ("Shall I...?") and proposing a joint activity ("Shall we...?"). The form is built by attaching ましょうか to the verb's masu-stem. Context determines whether the speaker is volunteering to help or inviting the listener to do something together. When the speaker is clearly the one who would perform the action alone (such as carrying a bag or opening a window), it functions as an offer. When the action naturally involves both parties (such as eating or going somewhere), it functions as a suggestion. This is distinct from ませんか, which is used more as a polite invitation ("Won't you...?") and focuses on the listener's willingness, whereas ましょうか is more collaborative or service-oriented. It is also more polite and formal than the plain-form equivalent ようか.

Common mistakes
A common mistake is confusing ましょうか with ませんか. While both can be used for invitations, ませんか focuses on asking the listener's preference ("Won't you...?"), whereas ましょうか is more about proposing to act together or offering to help. Another frequent error is using ましょうか when asking for permission; for that purpose, てもいいですか is appropriate instead. Learners also sometimes drop the か and say ましょう when they intend to ask a question — without か, the expression becomes a statement of intent ("Let's do it!") rather than a suggestion or offer. Finally, some learners attach ましょうか to the dictionary form or て-form of the verb instead of the masu-stem, which is grammatically incorrect.
