why

How / In what way / Why

JLPT N5AdverbNeutral
どうして is a versatile interrogative adverb that primarily asks about the method or manner of doing something ("how" or "in what way") and also commonly asks for a reason ("why"). When asking "why," どうして occupies a middle register between the more formal なぜ and the more casual なんで, making it appropriate for a wide range of everyday situations. Additionally, どうして can appear in rhetorical or emphatic contexts to express that something cannot possibly happen, often in the pattern どうして~できる/わかる. Because of its multiple meanings, context is essential for determining whether どうして is asking about a method or a reason. If the sentence involves a process or action that can be done in different ways, it likely means "how / in what way"; if the sentence involves a surprising or unexplained event, it likely means "why."

Functions

#1 Asking for a reason (why)

Structure
どうして + [event / state] + の?/ か?
どうして昨日学校きのうがっこうなかったの?

Why didn't you come to school yesterday?

Here どうして is used to ask for the reason behind an action or situation, equivalent to "why" in English. The speaker wants to know the cause or motive for the listener's absence. In this usage, どうして is softer and more conversational than なぜ but slightly more polite than なんで, making it a safe choice in most daily conversations.

Structures

Question (reason or method)
どうして + Sentence + か / の?

Common mistakes

A common mistake is confusing the "why" and "how" meanings of どうして. Learners should pay attention to context: if the sentence describes a surprising event, どうして likely means "why," but if it describes a process, it means "how." Another frequent error is using どうして interchangeably with どうやって; while both can mean "how," どうやって specifically targets method and procedure, whereas どうして is more ambiguous and can be misunderstood as "why." Learners also sometimes use どうして in very formal writing where なぜ would be more appropriate, or in very casual speech where なんで would sound more natural. Finally, beginners may forget that the rhetorical "cannot possibly" usage requires context and tone to work; without a rhetorical framing like だろう, the sentence may simply sound like a genuine question.
