Location of Action, Means, Reason, and More

JLPT N5ParticleNeutral
The particle is one of the most versatile particles in Japanese. Its most fundamental role is to mark the location where an action takes place, distinguishing it from , which marks the location where something exists. Beyond location, indicates the means or tool used to perform an action (by, with), the material something is made from, the reason or cause of something, a scope or limit (such as time, cost, or quantity), and a category or grouping. In casual spoken Japanese, can also function as a conjunction meaning 'and so' or 'so then,' connecting sentences in a conversational way. Because and can both translate as 'at' or 'in' in English, learners frequently confuse them; the key distinction is that pairs with action verbs while pairs with existence verbs like いる and ある.

Common mistakes

The most common mistake is confusing with when indicating location. Remember that marks where an action happens (公園 遊ぶ — play at the park), while marks where something or someone exists (公園 いる — be at the park). Another frequent error is using with existence verbs like ある and いる; these require , not . Learners also sometimes confuse the means usage of with , but marks the tool or method, not the direct object. Finally, the conjunctive use of at the start of a sentence is strictly casual; using it in formal contexts sounds out of place.
