JLPT N5Particle
から is one of the most versatile particles in Japanese. In its primary spatial and temporal use, it marks a starting point in space ('from a place'), time ('from a time / since'), or a sequence ('from a number or quantity'). It also marks the source or originator of something, such as the person from whom you received an item. In a separate but equally common function, から attaches to the end of a clause to express a reason or cause, meaning 'because' or 'since.' This causal use differs from ので, which is softer and more objective, whereas から tends to be more direct and subjective, often used to justify one's own actions or opinions. When expressing a range, から frequently pairs with まで ('until / to') to indicate 'from X to Y.' Despite its multiple meanings, the correct interpretation of から is usually clear from context: when it follows a noun marking a place, time, or person, it means 'from'; when it follows a clause (verb, adjective, or noun + だ), it means 'because.'
Functions
#1 Starting point in place
Structure
Place + から
学校から家まで歩きます。
Here から marks the spatial starting point of an action. The speaker walks starting at 学校 (school) and ending at 家 (home). Notice how から naturally pairs with まで to create a 'from A to B' construction. This is one of the most fundamental uses of から and one of the first patterns learners encounter.I walk from school to home.
Structures
- From (place / time / quantity)
- Noun + から
- Because (reason / cause)
- Clause (plain form) + から
Common mistakes
A common mistake is confusing the causal から with ので. While both mean 'because,' から is more subjective and direct, so using it in formal situations where ので would be more appropriate can sound pushy or blunt. Another frequent error is forgetting that when から follows a noun or な-adjective in the causal sense, だ must be inserted before から (e.g., 静かだから, not 静かから). Learners also sometimes confuse から (from) with より (than / from), which is used for comparisons and formal correspondence. Finally, beginners may try to use から to mean 'to' instead of 'from' — remember that から always marks the starting point, while まで or に marks the destination or endpoint.
