か – Listing Alternatives (Or)

JLPT N5ParticleNeutral
The particle is used between two or more nouns, phrases, or clauses to present alternatives, functioning much like the English word "or." It can appear in statements, questions, and embedded clauses alike. Unlike それとも, which is used specifically between two full alternative questions, is more versatile and can connect individual words or longer phrases within a single sentence. It is also distinct from または, which is more formal and typically used in written language, whereas is natural in both spoken and written Japanese across a wide range of registers. When listing more than two alternatives, is simply repeated between each item. This usage of should not be confused with the question-marking か ①, though the two are historically related — presenting alternatives inherently involves a kind of questioning or uncertainty about which option applies.

Examples

Example #1

コーヒーちゃみませんか。

Would you like to drink coffee or tea?

Here is placed between コーヒー and お茶 to present two choices. The listener is being asked to pick one of the two drinks. Notice that sits directly between the two nouns without any additional particles, and the rest of the sentence treats the "A B" block as a single noun phrase followed by the object marker を.

Common mistakes

A common error is confusing (or) with それとも, which is used to connect two complete alternative questions (e.g., コーヒーにしますか、それともお茶にしますか). Learners sometimes use それとも in the middle of a single sentence where between nouns would be correct. Another mistake is adding unnecessary particles before , such as saying コーヒーをお茶を instead of the correct コーヒーお茶を — the particle that marks the grammatical role (を, に, etc.) normally comes after the entire "A B" group, not before each individual noun. Finally, some learners confuse this usage with the question-ending and add unintended question intonation; remember that meaning "or" is placed between items inside a sentence, not at the end.
