JLPT N5Conjunction
〜ながら is a versatile conjunction most commonly used to express two actions performed simultaneously by the same subject, translating to 'while doing.' It attaches to the masu-stem of a verb and indicates that the action before ながら is the secondary or background activity, while the main clause describes the primary action. For example, 'listening to music while studying' frames studying as the main activity and listening as the accompanying one. Beyond simultaneous actions, 〜ながら has a secondary use meaning 'despite' or 'although,' where it connects a state or fact to a contradictory outcome, similar to 〜のに or 〜けれども. This concessive use often appears as 〜ながら(も) and tends toward a more formal or written register. The simultaneous-action usage is common in everyday conversation and writing alike. It differs from 〜つつ, which carries a similar meaning but is more literary, and from 〜ている間に, which emphasizes the time frame rather than the concurrent nature of two activities.
Functions
#1 Simultaneous actions by the same subject
Structure
Verb (masu-stem) + ながら + Main verb
音楽を聞きながら、勉強します。
This is the most common use of ながら. Here, 聞きながら marks listening to music as the secondary, background activity happening at the same time as the main activity of studying. The subject of both actions must be the same person. The action before ながら is always the subordinate activity, and the verb in the main clause represents the primary focus.I study while listening to music.
Structures
- Simultaneous actions (Verb)
- Verb (masu-stem) + ながら + Main action
- Concessive / Despite (Verb / Adjective / Noun)
- Verb (masu-stem) / い-Adjective / Noun + ながら(も) + Contradictory statement
Common mistakes
A frequent mistake is using ながら when the two actions have different subjects; ながら requires that the same person performs both actions. Learners sometimes confuse ながら with 〜ている間に, but ながら emphasizes doing two things at once, while 間に emphasizes that something happens during the time period of another action. Another common error is placing the main action before ながら instead of the secondary action; the verb before ながら should always be the background or less important activity. Finally, beginners often overlook the concessive 'despite' meaning of ながら entirely, and when they encounter it in reading, they try to interpret it as simultaneous actions, which leads to confusion.
